How to Choose a Steam Boiler Manufacturer: Technical and Commercial Checklist

Compare steam boiler manufacturers by code basis, real steam demand, fuel and emissions scope, water treatment, auxiliaries, inspection documents and total installed cost.

Compare the complete steam plant on one operating basis.

Define demand

  • Normal, minimum and peak steam flow;
  • Pressure, temperature and hourly profile;
  • Feedwater, condensate and water quality.

Define delivery

  • Boiler, fuel, water and control boundary;
  • Code, inspection and document requirements;
  • Site work, commissioning and service roles.

The final boiler must comply with the confirmed destination-country rules. Buyers should verify licensing, code applicability and local registration directly with the responsible authorities and contracted parties.

1. Does the manufacturer size from a time-based steam demand profile?

Connected equipment load is not automatically the correct boiler capacity. List every steam user with normal demand, start-up demand, operating hours and whether loads occur together. Add realistic distribution losses and justified future margin. Check the result against minimum demand, because a heavily oversized boiler may cycle at low load.

2. Are steam pressure, temperature and burner turndown confirmed?

State the pressure required at the process and estimate distribution pressure loss; do not simply copy a nameplate pressure from an old boiler. Confirm whether saturated or superheated steam is required. Ask how the burner or solid-fuel system responds across normal and minimum load and how the controls manage changing demand.

For gas, oil or dual-fuel units, define fuel pressure, composition or viscosity, burner modulation and fuel changeover requirements. For solid fuel, load response is linked to fuel feeding, grate, furnace and draft control.

3. Does the proposal include feedwater, treatment and condensate strategy?

Water quality affects scale, corrosion, blowdown and equipment life. Supply the raw-water analysis and state condensate return rate, temperature and contamination risk. Ask for the proposed treatment concept, feedwater-tank or deaeration arrangement, pump duty, chemical dosing boundary and blowdown strategy.

Do not compare boiler fuel consumption without the same feedwater temperature, condensate return and blowdown assumptions. Those conditions materially affect the heat balance.

4. Is combustion equipment matched to fuel and local emissions limits?

For gas and liquid fuel, provide actual composition, pressure, temperature and availability. Confirm fuel-train, atomization or preheating requirements, control standard and emissions target. For biomass or coal, provide representative fuel analysis and state storage, preparation and handling conditions.

Ask who supplies fans, economizer, dust collection, emissions equipment, ash handling and chimney. The correct system depends on fuel, boiler configuration and destination requirements; generic promises are not a substitute for confirmed limits.

5. Is the quote for the pressure part or the complete steam plant?

Use a responsibility matrix with inclusions, exclusions and battery limits. The same word—“complete”—can cover very different scopes in different quotations.

6. Which code, license, inspection and document requirements apply?

State the destination country and ask each bidder to identify its proposed design and manufacturing basis. Independently confirm local registration, inspection and installer requirements. Do not accept a general certificate claim as proof that a specific configuration can be placed into service at your site.

Agree an inspection and test plan and a final document index before order. Depending on contract scope, documents may include approved drawings, calculations or data sheets, material and welding records, nondestructive examination records, pressure-test reports, electrical drawings, manuals and packing records.

7. Are efficiency, fuel consumption and price compared fairly?

Efficiency requires a declared basis: fuel lower or higher heating value, load point, feedwater temperature, steam condition, blowdown, ambient and flue-gas conditions, and included heat recovery. Fuel consumption calculations must use the same basis. Also ask whether fan, pump and other auxiliary electricity is included.

8. Are shipment, installation and after-sales interfaces written down?

Confirm dimensions, shipping split, preservation, lifting, loose accessories and export packing. Identify drawings needed for foundations, boiler-room layout, utilities and connection points before equipment arrives.

For commissioning, define site readiness, duration, travel responsibility, translator, tools, fuel, water, electricity, operator training and acceptance checks. Ask how troubleshooting, spare parts and remote support will work across time zones after handover.

9. Steam boiler RFQ checklist

Send the same minimum data set to each steam boiler manufacturer.

  • Normal, minimum and peak steam demand by time period, operating hours and start-up conditions.
  • Required steam pressure and temperature at the process, distribution distance and expected losses.
  • Raw-water analysis, feedwater temperature, condensate return percentage and contamination risks.
  • Fuel specification, availability, pressure or preparation, backup-fuel need and local emissions limits.
  • Country, altitude, ambient conditions, power supply, applicable code and boiler-room constraints.
  • Required auxiliaries, inspection and document list, delivery term, erection and commissioning scope.

A boiler manufacturer can only make a reliable proposal from reliable project inputs. Mark unknown data clearly and agree when it will be confirmed.
