How to Choose a Thermal Oil Heater Manufacturer: 12 Questions Before You Buy
Evaluate a thermal oil heater manufacturer by system engineering, coil-flow evidence, controls, documents, inspection, supply boundary and total project cost.

A manufacturer name or catalogue model is not a complete system specification. Confirm local code, fuel, emissions and installation requirements for the destination country.
1. Does the manufacturer begin with your process—or a catalogue model?
A credible thermal oil heater proposal starts with normal, minimum and peak heat duty; required supply and return temperatures; process heat exchangers; operating hours; thermal-fluid type; and the layout of the circulation loop. Capacity alone does not define coil flow, pump head, expansion volume or control response.
Ask the supplier to list every assumption. If your process data are incomplete, a preliminary range can still be discussed, but the quote should identify what must be confirmed before manufacture.
2. Can the supplier explain coil flow, film temperature and pressure drop?
The fluid must carry heat away from the coil at all operating loads. Ask how minimum flow is established, what fluid properties are used at operating temperature, how pressure drop is estimated and which interlocks protect against low circulation. The bulk temperature shown on a data sheet is not the same as the local fluid-film temperature at the tube wall.

3. Is the quotation a heater price or a complete thermal-fluid system?
Put the supply boundary into a table. Identify the heater, burner or solid-fuel furnace, circulation pumps, expansion tank, storage or drain tank, oil-gas separator where required, valves, instruments, control panel, heat recovery, chimney and project documentation. Then identify process-side piping, insulation, civil work, erection and utilities.
Heat generation
Heater body, combustion equipment, fans, fuel train or feeding, and agreed heat recovery.
Heat transport
Pumps, tanks, separation, valves, instruments and interfaces to process users.
Site responsibility
Piping, foundations, utilities, erection, commissioning roles and local approvals.
4. Are fuel equipment and safety controls matched to the site?
For gas or liquid fuel, confirm gas pressure and composition, liquid-fuel viscosity and temperature, fuel-train boundary, burner modulation, electrical standard and local emissions requirements. For biomass or coal, provide a representative analysis covering moisture, ash, calorific value, particle size, contaminants and ash behavior; feeding, furnace, grate, draft, dust and ash systems must be selected together.
Ask for a cause-and-effect or protection summary covering loss of flow, abnormal temperature, burner or fuel-system trip, fan failure, power loss and emergency shutdown. Final protection philosophy must follow the confirmed design and applicable rules.
5. Are efficiency and capacity claims on the same test basis?
Headline values are comparable only when the basis is the same. Require the stated fuel heating value, load point, inlet and outlet fluid temperatures, ambient conditions, excess-air or flue-gas assumptions, heat-recovery equipment and auxiliary power boundary. A percentage without these conditions should not determine the purchase.
Also compare usable modulation, warm-up behavior, standby losses, maintenance access and the effect of local fuel quality. These factors influence annual cost more than a small unsupported difference in catalogue efficiency.
6. What inspection and document package will be delivered?
Before order, agree the applicable design code and local registration responsibilities. Request a contract document index rather than assuming every supplier includes the same records. Depending on the project, the list may include approved general arrangement and foundation drawings, data sheets, material records, inspection and test plan, electrical drawings, manuals, spare-parts list, packing list and agreed test reports.
Define hold or witness points before fabrication. If third-party inspection is required, state the agency, scope, document review and witness schedule in the purchase specification.
7. Who owns packing, installation interfaces and commissioning?
Export projects fail at interfaces as often as at equipment. Confirm shipping dimensions and split points, preservation, marks, packing list, lifting information and which loose items ship separately. Ask what site drawings are issued before shipment and which utilities and foundations the buyer must prepare.
Commissioning support should have a written boundary: duration, travel and local costs, translator needs, tools, fuel and utilities, operator training, performance checks and remote support. Clarify spare and wear parts for the intended operating period.
8. Compare total installed and lifecycle cost—not only heater price.
