1. Why can two thermal oil heater prices look completely different?

The phrase thermal oil heater price can describe a bare heater body, a fired heater with burner, or a complete thermal-fluid heating system. Those are not equivalent offers. A low headline number may exclude circulation pumps, expansion and storage vessels, instruments, controls, heat recovery, chimney, fuel handling, export packing, documentation or commissioning.

Start by defining what the process needs. A thermal oil heater or thermal fluid heater system must generate heat, circulate the fluid safely, accommodate thermal expansion, control temperatures and transfer heat to the process. The quotation should show who owns each part of that loop.

2. What project data does a supplier need before quoting?

For a preliminary selection, provide normal, minimum and peak useful heat duty; required supply and return temperatures; the thermal-fluid name or property data; daily and annual operating hours; fuel specification; project location; altitude and ambient range; power supply; emissions limits; applicable code; and the required supply boundary.

4. The main cost drivers in an industrial thermal oil heater quotation

Heat duty, temperatures and circulation

Higher useful duty can increase heat-transfer surface, combustion input, circulation flow, pump power and transport dimensions. Higher fluid temperatures may affect coil design, insulation, valves, instruments and thermal-fluid management. Final design must also keep fluid velocity, pressure drop, tube-wall conditions and operating flexibility within the confirmed basis.

Design code, materials and inspection

Applicable code, pressure and temperature ratings, material requirements, welding and nondestructive examination, third-party inspection and document language all affect engineering and fabrication scope. Confirm destination-country registration and approval responsibilities before order.

Transport split and site assembly

A shipment may be factory-assembled, skid-mounted or split for container and site constraints. Packing, preservation, lifting, overseas freight and site erection interfaces should be compared on the same Incoterm and physical boundary.

5. Fuel choice changes more than the combustion chamber.

A gas or oil-fired thermal oil heater needs a matched burner, modulation range, fuel train or liquid-fuel preparation, controls and emissions basis. Fuel pressure, composition, viscosity and local electrical standard can change the package.

A biomass-fired thermal oil heater requires representative fuel data—moisture, ash, calorific value, size distribution and contaminants—because feeding, furnace, grate, draft, dust and ash equipment are part of the same combustion system. A coal-fired thermal oil heater similarly depends on actual coal analysis and local emissions requirements. Comparing only the heater shell creates a false price comparison.

6. Lowest purchase price is not always the lowest operating cost.

Normalize expected fuel consumption using the same useful duty, load profile, heating-value basis and system efficiency boundary. Then consider burner or feeding turndown, auxiliary electricity, heat recovery, standby loss, maintenance access, wear parts, thermal-fluid life and local service support.

Operating cost estimates are sensitive to fuel quality and plant schedule. Use the fuel-consumption calculation guide to understand the input basis, but require the supplier to state every project assumption. Unsupported percentages or savings claims should not decide the purchase.

7. A practical way to normalize supplier quotations

  1. Issue one RFQ data sheet and one equipment boundary to all suppliers.
  2. Require a deviations, exclusions and assumptions list with every offer.
  3. Convert all capacities and fuel values to one unit and one heating-value basis.
  4. Compare normal-load performance as well as rated-load claims.
  5. List loose-shipped items, freight, site piping, civil work, erection and utilities separately.
  6. Agree drawings, inspection, documentation, commissioning, training, spares and warranty interfaces.
  7. Record unresolved technical items before commercial comparison.
